Bring 'em to me

Gosh I've been working SO much!!
So it's been interesting to work with an 'older' crowd, no offense ladies! and I have noticed some challenges in helping them put together outfits that are hip/up-to-date/age appropriate/flattering etc...
I realized us young'ns have it easy! Firm upper arms, can look at least moderately attractive in almost all colors...
Anyway my question to you, fellow fashion bloggers and readers is, what is the greatest mistake women of a 'certain age' make when trying to dress simultaneous their age and in style?
And side note: is it a worse if you 'know what works for you' and stick with that and only that, or if you take fashion risks and sometimes end up looking like you're trying too hard/are too old/aren't doing yourself any favors?
I have my pointed opinions, of course, but I want yours.

  1. 1. Wearing clothing that is too tight/wearing clothing that is too loose.

    2. Wearing a size rather than what fits. Be your size now, pls.

    3. Fearing to show upper arms, even when it's 95 outside--folks, everyone sees them already, go for comfort.

    4. Not going with your good colors *now*, as opposed to 20 years ago. Skin dulls, hair color changes (or you have changed it).

    5. Fearing having a waistline/fearing not having a waistline.

    6. If you wore it the first time around, you are hereby officially exempted from having to wear it when it comes back.

If you can adhere to all of the above, go ahead and try it out. If you have to be 5'11" and weigh 110 to pull it off, don't feel obliged to take it up. On the other hand, it's just trying something on, why not live a little?

    been there done that,

  2. I think as we age we need to stay loose in knees, open to improv. Color is a big thing to pay attention to. The colors we wore in our 20's and 30's are probably not what we can wear as our hair and skin lighten.

One of my fashion mentors (Marcy Tilton at marcytilton.com) says anyone one can wear almost anything if you pay attention to proportion. As our shape changes we need to alter the length of our clothes and the width (maybe the big flowy tops as not the best style for us right now).

My best advise is, every once in a while, take someone new with you when you shop, someone whose stlye, young or old, you like. Listen to what they like, take their advise under consideration, try on something new, a new color, a new style. See yourself with 'eyes that don't know'.
